Improving water quality
Because the dominant land use of the Morland catchment is agriculture, the waterways will be impacted by diffuse agricultural pollution. One method of reducing the impact of agricultural runoff on riverine systems is to plant 20 metres of riparian forest along the banks of first order streams. The riparian forest acts as a buffer strip, intercepting runoff before it reaches waterways.
The model provided by Morland CIS can alter land use to simulate the impact of riparian buffer strip planting on hydrological functioning within a catchment.
